Contributing to Europe’s defence-space technology agenda

Vimotek is contributing to the European Defence Agency’s CapTech Space, a European forum for research, innovation and technology development in defence space.

CapTech Space brings together experts from EDA Member States, industry, SMEs, research organisations and academia to identify capability gaps, technology priorities and opportunities for multinational cooperation.

Vimotek participates as a non-governmental expert, contributing industry perspective and technical experience to discussions around future European space capabilities.

Connecting operational needs with technology development

The purpose of EDA’s Capability Technology groups is to connect defence capability needs with research and technology development.

Within CapTech Space, areas of focus include space situational awareness and space operations, protection of space systems, defence-space architecture and data processing, alongside other enabling technologies for European defence capability.

The forum provides a setting where Member States and industry can identify common technology gaps, develop shared research priorities and explore potential collaborative projects.

For Vimotek, this creates a direct connection between the development of space technology and the operational requirements emerging across European defence organisations.

Spacecraft encounters as a defence-space challenge

Many of the challenges addressed by CapTech Space become particularly demanding when spacecraft operate in proximity to one another.

Operators may need to conduct planned rendezvous, inspection or servicing missions. They may also need to understand unexpected approaches, anomalous manoeuvres or other nearby-object behaviour around high-value assets.

These are different operational situations, but both depend on confidence in what is happening around a spacecraft and what actions are available.

Vimotek’s focus on spacecraft encounters therefore intersects with several of the capability areas addressed within CapTech Space — including proximity operations, space situational awareness, mission assurance and the resilience of space assets.

Contributing industry expertise to European cooperation

CapTech Space is designed as a bridge between governments, defence organisations, industry and research.

Its role is not simply to discuss future technologies, but to identify areas where multinational research and technology cooperation can strengthen European capability.

For Vimotek, participation provides an opportunity to contribute practical industry experience while remaining closely connected to the evolving needs of European defence-space stakeholders.

It also complements the company’s involvement in wider European initiatives, including projects under the European Defence Fund focused on space security, servicing and increasingly capable operations in orbit.

Strengthening European capability in space

Space systems are increasingly central to European security and resilience, while the ability to operate, understand and protect those systems is becoming more strategically important.

CapTech Space forms part of the European Defence Agency’s broader effort to coordinate research and technology development around those needs and to strengthen European strategic autonomy in defence space.
